Gold’s worth might be soaring, but come on, guys. History is priceless. Whoever took this Gold Rush jewelry box from the Oakland Museum of California, bring it back. I wish I’d seen this lovely little object before its untimely departure. Just seven inches high, in gold and gold quartz, with engraved scenes from the railroad heyday inside its top. It’s said to have been made by San Francisco goldsmith A. Andrews between 1869 and 1878. There was a lot of lawlessness in those days, but what a shame to carry on the tradition.
